Microscopes
A microscope is one of the most commonly used professional optical instruments. Classic upright laboratory microscopes are indispensable equipment in biology, medicine, chemistry and materials science. They are mainly used in biological and medical laboratories, research institutions, industry and production for detailed observation and analysis of microorganisms, fixed cells, tissue sections or material samples.
Some important areas of application of laboratory microscopes
- Biology: a biological microscope is used to examine fixed tissue and cell sections, urine, blood, plasma and mucous membrane smears, microorganisms, bacteria, yeast and fungi.
- Medicine: in medicine and veterinary science, a medical microscope is used in diagnostics and applied research, for example, in laboratory medicine, dermatology, urology, gynecology and pathology.
- Industry and production: professional microscopes are used for testing materials and quality control of various products and materials.
- Research and Teaching: For conducting scientific experiments and research in universities, colleges, and research institutes, and for teaching microscopic concepts in a practical manner.
- Materials Science: For investigating and analyzing new materials and surface structures.
An important consideration when choosing a microscope is the type of head. Monocular, binocular, and trinocular heads have different designs and are suitable for specific types of observations.
Compound or Stereo
The two main types of optical microscopes are:
- Compound microscopes have two or more convex lenses that allow detailed examination of a specimen in a two-dimensional image. Compound microscopes are available in both monocular and binocular formats. Typically, the magnification range of a compound microscope is between 40x and 1000x.
- Stereo microscopes provide the viewer with an erect (upright and unrestricted) stereoscopic (3-dimensional) image. Most stereo microscopes are used at magnifications between 5x and 400x.
Microscope Head Type
An important consideration when choosing a microscope is the type of head. Monocular, binocular, and trinocular heads have different designs and are suitable for specific types of observations.
Monocular Microscopes
Monocular professional microscopes have a single tube with an eyepiece at one end and an objective lens at the other. The design means that specimens will appear flat and without depth when you look through the eyepiece. Monocular microscopes are easy to use and are ideal for simple research.
Binocular Microscopes
Binocular microscopes have two tubes and eyepieces, making it easier to examine specimens. Binocular heads can be used for medical, research, and industrial purposes.
Trinocular Microscopes
Trinocular microscopes are similar to binoculars, except they have an extra port for attaching a camera and taking photos or videos. This makes the trinocular head type ideal for researchers.
Illumination Type
There are four main types of illumination: tungsten, fluorescent, halogen, and LED.
- Halogen. Halogen produces a strong white light and usually includes a variable rheostat so that the intensity of the light can be adjusted.
- LED. LED ring lights are becoming more common. When used with batteries, the microscope becomes completely portable and can be used in the field or at conferences and trade shows with limited electrical outlets or where wiring is an issue.
- Fluorescent Light. Fluorescent lighting is commonly used in specialized microscopes for biological research.
- Basic Tungsten. Lighting for entry-level microscopes.
Selection Criteria
- Magnification: Monocular microscopes operate effectively at total magnifications up to 1000X. Higher magnification levels require a binocular microscope.
- Comfort: Most people find binocular microscopes more ergonomic and easier to use than monocular microscopes.
- Price: Although the price ranges overlap, a monocular microscope is usually the least expensive type of microscope, and a trinocular microscope is the most expensive.
- Illumination type: The LED lamp type satisfies a wide range of user needs.
