Cholesterol is a natural fatty alcohol that is found in almost all living organisms as part of cell membranes. Approximately 75-80% of it is synthesized by the human body itself - mainly the liver, as well as the intestines, adrenal glands, kidneys, and gonads. The remaining 20-25% comes to us with food. When the metabolism of fats in the human body is disturbed, there is too much cholesterol in the blood and its excess is deposited on the walls of the arteries in the form of cholesterol plaques. Their size gradually increases, this leads to a narrowing of the lumen of the damaged vessel. When the lumen of the artery is closed by about three quarters, the disruption of the blood supply to one or another organ becomes clinically noticeable, which leads to significant violations of the function of various organs and systems. Most often, atherosclerotic lesions affect those organs that need oxygen the most, since their activity is much more active - these are the brain, myocardium, kidneys, and lower limbs.
