MRI machines
MRI stands for magnetic resonance imaging. The technology involves the use of powerful magnets and radio waves to create 2D and 3D images of bones and soft tissues. MRI is used to obtain detailed images of what is happening inside the patient's body and, unlike X-rays or CT scans, it does not use radiation.
Patients who are prescribed this diagnostic procedure are interested in how the magnetic resonance imaging scanner works. There are many different reasons why a doctor may recommend an MRI, all of which are related to health checks. The technology allows you to visualize bones, soft tissues, blood vessels, and the brain. MRI can be used to diagnose an injury or disease, while in other cases it can be used to check progress in response to treatment the patient receives:
- The brain and spinal cord are examined to determine the degree of damage caused by stroke, multiple sclerosis, tumor, and neurological diseases.
- The heart and blood vessels are examined for signs of heart disease, damage caused by heart attacks, and structural problems with the heart valves and blood vessels.
- Bones and joints are visualized to detect injuries and injuries, as well as bone and cancer infections.
MRI is also used to investigate the health of other organs, including the bladder, intestines, liver, kidneys, and pancreas. The scanner also helps assess the health of the ovaries and mammary glands in women and the prostate in men, usually in the context of cancer detection. Depending on the reason for the MRI, you may be injected with a special dye into your body to help certain tissues appear more clearly. The types of MRI machines vary.
Closed scanner
A closed-type MRI machine is a large cylindrical machine, a narrow tunnel that creates a strong magnetic field around the patient. This type of MRI is the most popular on the market, due to speed, image quality, variety of options and sequences. The closed scanner is powered by a permanent magnet, they are always superconducting, which generates an amazing amount of heat, so liquid helium is required to maintain the superconductivity of the magnet.
Open scanners
Some MRI machines look like semi-closed structures, like a table with a canopy. Most open MRI machines do not use superconducting magnets; they use permanent magnets (resistive magnets). Thus, instead of liquid helium, they use water and air cooling. An open-type MRI machine uses two parallel magnets with a hole between them to obtain images. As MRI technologies are constantly evolving, there are now technologies on the market where magnets are mounted vertically to produce an axial image. An open MRI tomograph is primarily intended for patients with heavy weight and claustrophobic patients.
Classification of MRI machines by purpose
In addition to traditional MRI machines, there are also devices for performing magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) — this procedure is used to assess blood flow in the arteries. MRA can also be used to detect aneurysms in the brain and vascular malformations of — blood vessel abnormalities in the brain, spinal cord or other parts of the body.
Devices with low magnetic field strength (0.2–0.4 T) are often available for diagnosing limb damage. Their price is low, as are operating costs and maintenance.
When carrying out surveys requiring special detail, the use of a 3-tetramagnetic resonance tomograph should be considered. The 3T scanner is indispensable for advanced brain imaging (DWI, DTI spectroscopy) and other high-precision diagnostic studies.
Vertical magnetic resonance apparatus — is the most open option for patients who experience severe claustrophobia. The device has a chair in which the patient sits and looks outside without being closed. The device was designed for patients who cannot lie down due to injury or physical condition.
